SLSRC April Club Build Livestream, Tape Measure Beam Antenna

April 5, 2021…

Get ready for the next livestream coming April 15!  This month we’re building a directional antenna. This antenna paired with the attenuator we built on our March livestream will get you ready for our upcoming ‘fox hunt’. It’s not a kit but all of the necessary items can be picked up locally at the hardware store. The only specialty item needed is a piece of coax with the connector to connect to your HT and the offset attenuator we built in March.  Here is what you will need:

 Parts List

  • 25 foot 1 inch wide steel tape measure (nothing good, we’re cutting it up, try Harbor Freight)
  • 10 foot piece of 3/4 inch Schedule 40 PVC
  • Two 3/4 inch PVC Cross connectors
  • Two 3/4 inch PVC T connector
  • Six 3/4 to 1 1/2 inch stainless Hose Clamps, zip ties also work if you can’t find them
  • One 5 inch piece of solid 14 ga wire (can be bought by the foot if you don’t have scraps)
  • One length of RG-58 cable, approx 6 foot with connector or adapters matching your HT. Most HTs use SMA connectors, and you can either do BNC or PL259 on your cable
  • Rosin core solder and Flux
  • Electrical Tape

  • Soldering Iron
  • Tin Snips
  • Wire Cutter
  • Screwdriver or nut driver
  • PVC cutter or fine tooth saw
  • Sand paper
  • Ruler or tape measure

If you have the tools and a piece of coax this should only set you back around $20. If you want to work ahead, we’re basing our build off of the work of  KB9VBR, NT1K, and WB2HOL

We will be live on April 15 at 7:00 pm, streaming starts at 6:45. Join us by clicking on this link
