SLSRC and Woodridge Middle School teamed up on Friday, October 4th 2019 to help promote Amateur Radio and the Woodridge’s upcoming ARISS contact in December 2019. First Friday is a St. Louis Science Center event held the first Friday of every month from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. with a common theme each month. October’s theme was Stranger Things, a science fiction TV series on Netflix that is in its third season and has been renewed for a fourth. The TV series follows the adventures of kids in the 80’s where Amateur Radio is part of the story line.
Tom Laybourn (KEØSGU and Woodridge Science Teacher), Bill Carroll (KC9CIK), Rebecca Carroll (KC9CIJ) and Kyle Krieg (AAØZ) were in attendance along with other faculty of Woodridge Middle School.
Tom, Bill and others tried to make a satellite contact during the event, but were unsuccessful. It’s the effort that counts, right?
Different types of radios were on display including HF, FM, digital C4FM and a Raspberry Pi hotspot to show off the latest technology in Amatuer Radio. We had lots of interest in the hobby, with many people sharing stories of family members who were hams or asking how to get licensed.
SLSRC plans on attending future First Friday events so stay tuned.
