SLSRC (St. Louis and Suburban Radio Club) & Woodridge Middle School teamed up at Fair St. Louis over the 4th of July holiday to demonstrate Amateur Radio and how it can be incorporated into STEM (science, technology, engineering & math) curriculum. SLSRC member Tom Laybourn (KEØSGU) is a science teacher at Woodridge Middle School and is an advocate of using Amateur Radio in his 8th grade science class to help teach propagation of waves and the study of RF.
Kyle (AAØZ), Bill (KC9CIK) and Rebecca (KC9CIJ) were in attendance along with Tom during Fair St. Louis to help demonstrate Amateur Radio, make some radio contacts and interact with the public and interested youth. The 13 Colonies special event stations were on the air throughout the event during the holiday week with which we used to make contacts. Most of us contacted 6 to 9 of the 13 Colonies during the holiday week with 100W radio and an end fed antenna at 20ft.
SLSRC will be working with Woodridge Middle School on their ARISS contact in Dec 2019. ARISS is a NASA program to use Amateur Radio to talk to astronauts on the International Space Station.
SLSRC with Woodridge Middle School will be at different events in the next 6 months to help showcase Amateur Radio, STEM & the ARISS contact event to the public.
